Witney renews its vows with its twin towns
In 1980 Witney twinned with the coastal town of Le Touquet in Northern France and in 1990 it twinned with Unterhaching just south of Munich in southern Germany.
On May 2nd and May 3rd we joined together with representatives of both towns, in Witney, to celebrate 45 years of Twinning with Le Touquet and 35 years with Unterhaching.
The centrepiece of our celebrations was a formal resigning of our commitments to friendship and understanding between each other.
The ceremony and cake cutting took place at Witney Corn Exchange on the afternoon of Friday 2nd May.
During the weekend our French and German guests visited a local school to give our children the opportunity to try out their language skills.
There were also visits to the Blanket Hall, Witney Museum and a visit to Witney Fire Station.
They also greatly enjoyed a visit to Witney Beer festival and a comparing of our local beers.
Mayor Owen Collins said:
“It was wonderful to welcome our friends from Le Touquet and Unterhaching to Witney for a long weekend, in celebration of 35 and 45 years of partnership and solidarity.
At a time of such international volatility, it was especially important to recommit to our shared values of peace, understanding and friendship.
Thanks to the hard work and hospitality of many local groups and organisations, we were also able to treat our guests to a spirited weekend of fun and friendship, aside from the formalities - creating memories and strengthening the bond that I hope will last for as long as Witney does”
